ANN-MAREE JACOBS |
| Having been born into a Royal Australian Navy family and later
marrying a Navy man, I have spent my entire life moving.
Whilst living in Papua New Guinea in 1983 I attended a patchwork
class at the YMCA and then returning to Australia in 1985, I attended a
beginners class with Lyn Pebbles in the Sutherland Shire. This established a great grounding in what proved to become such an important
part of my life . In 1986 I sustained an injury which incapacitated me for nearly a year and being unable to do pretty much anything else, I turned to patchwork which helped me through this time. I think this is the reason I will always prefer to work by hand (if there were only the time!). Moving to Canberra in 1993, I joined Canberra Quilters and decided to formalize my patchwork teaching and consequently did my accreditation with Canberra Quilters. I have continued to teach around the Canberra region ever since . Having moved so many times (now living in my fiftieth home) and continuing my love of travelling, I have found patchwork has introduced me to many interesting, caring and giving people who have the easy acceptance of others, be they in Brisbane, Bendigo, Dorango, Washington, Port Moresby or Paris. From having had a Texas ranger sit beside me in the airport in Houston when our plane was held up due to a snow storm and telling me all about his Grandmother who made quilts for his family to the lady who has entrusted me with her grandmothers button collection due to the fact her family did not value them, has given me a wonderful sense of goodwill with people around the world. From the on-line groups I belong to where there is always someone who can answer a question or tell you where you can find something to the people who made over 4,000 quilts for the Kosovo refugees or send patchwork hearts to those who need support due to illness, loss of a loved one or injury, these people share a special place in my heart. The circle of friends who recently sent fourteen quilts to Africa to an Aids orphanage and are now working to help the fire victims in Victoria and the camaraderie of working on a community project just for the fun of it — these are some of the reasons patchwork has become such an integral part of my life. Every quilt is an expression of the individual — the use of colour, style of fabric, size and interpretation of a pattern produces a quilt that gives comfort, beauty and warmth. |
